Until asked the question: "What did you do, Grandad?", the author thought he had enjoyed an unremarkable working life. Upon reflection however he was able to report, by means of entertaining anecdotes and self-confessions, upon over 30 periods of activity which sustained him in one way or another. From pocket-money jobs to waiting at table, from swimming instructor to controlling the pea harvest, from research scientist to Royal Mail postman, librarian to voluntary worker, the reminiscences flow thick and fast. Any reader disappointed to find that that coal miner, secret agent and train driver are three jobs not included in this chronicle of activity will be compensated by reading of coming home from work as grimy as a coalminer, of being on the receiving end of a credible murder threat, and of being sequestered underground with £40 million in hard cash to count. For 30 years the "Day Job" was in the business of banking where there were many high jinks behind the scenes, an abundance of quirky characters and occasional dishonesty, culminating in the author's own small part in the enormous misselling scandal which nearly brought the banks to their knees. Warning: the author's roots give rise to occasional use of what might be called 'east Anglian vernacular'!
